Most people do not realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries there were many plant explorers who accompanied expeditions that would bring magnificent plants back to Britain. One of the best known was John Tradescant, Jr., from the 17th century who with his father, brought back many plants from their travels. The genus Tradescantia (Spiderwort) was even named after them.
